National Training Squad practicing a pitch shot over bunker to the flag at Minthis Hills Academy. David McKibben and Paul Dyer give advice

The National Training Squad was set up in 2012 and run by Paul Dyer. In 2013 using funding given to The CGF by The R&A the Junior Committee, in consultation with Paul Dyer, "The National Head Coach" decided to increase the teaching staff to 3 and Paul appointed Karl Morgan of Elea and David McKibben of Minthis Hills to his team.

The Juniors now meet the Pro's for a monthly, four hour coaching session that includes:- coaching on the training grounds and playing advice and coaching in a game play situation on the various academies and golf courses around Paphos. The success of this increase in professional involvement was proven worthwhile when a team of 7 juniors from The National Squad visited Greece to play in the Faldo Series and enjoyed resounding success. Jessica Heap came 1st in The U/21 Girls and will go to America for The Grand Final. Robert Reynolds came 3rd in the U/21 Boys, Pavlos Efstathiou was 6th in the U/18 Boys and twelve year old Nikolas Pitiris came 10th in the U/16 Boys category. This was a very credible performance by those mentioned and the other 4 participants who were Alex Toouli of Secret Valley Lukas Drakos, Constantinos Christodoulides of Aphrodite Hills.

Later in 2013 it is planned to reward some of our younger less experienced juniors with "trials" for a new "Mini Nationals squad" so that we can spot young talent earlier than ever before. These Juniors will be sent by the various golf clubs for assessment by the national coaches to see if we can fast track them into the main National Squad, with the aim of a credible national team of U/14s by 2016.
